12th – 14th June A busy few days of of reflection, conversation, tears and unity at The Old Print Works, Birmingham. Many, many thanks to Birmingham’s Centre for Migration and Forced Displacement for hosting us, to Jane Thakoordinfor leading our creative workshop, and to Aya Haidar for sharing her beautiful work and giving us all such an inspirational insight into her powerful practice and process.
Once again, it has been such a privilege to be in a room full of so much positve, creative energy and unshakeable solidarity, to meet and work with so many local artists, crafters and activists, and to welcome all those who had travelled from as far afield as Cumbria, Brighton, London and Oxford to see the exhibition and join our workshop and artists’ talk.
As well as displaying the growing quilt, we were honoured to display and share some of the incredibe artwork made by children in Gaza who are part of the Gaza Great Minds school project. Thank you to all at Gaza Great Minds for the incredible work you are doing and we are looking forward to more collaborations in the future.
“Good news! Drawings by Gaza Great Minds students have reached Birmingham, UK. By using the art of drawing the kids have been able to express how they feel, think, fear and hope for the future. They transformed their life experiences into drawings which capture the happenings in their native land, as well as their own feelings.
They drew hunger
They drew the things they miss
They drew what they see and imagine
By simply drawing the kids were able to explain what life was like growing up under war, facing uncertainty, and drawing despite their hunger. Thanks to Each Child a Light for this opportunity of allowing me to share their stories through their artwork.” Noor Abu Mariam, GGM
